The Changi Museum details Singapore during the Japanese occupation of WWII. The complex is comprised of a replica chapel, plus a replica cell identical to one from the original Changi Prison, where many Singaporeans were confined as POWs from 1942-1945. Exhibits show touching portrayals of daily life as a POW, historic photographs and artifacts, large scale murals and storyboards. If you’re not familiar with Singapore’s WWII history, this is the perfect place to learn.

From the age of six, Chang Ya Fa collected toys and related ephemera like comics and posters. His collection today amounts to more than 50,000 items, of which only about 3% is actually displayed. The purpose-built five-story structure houses items hailing from some 25 countries, and covers about a century’s worth of toymaking. Pre-war Japanese toys, a teddy bear collection, Chinese comic covers from the 1920s, Tintin collectibles, Disneyana, Betty Boop collectibles and a host of other rarities line shelves and walls. Even if you’re somewhat curmudgeonly, this museum will boggle your mind!

The National Museum of Singapore is home to a range of permanent and visiting exhibitions on local and Asian culture, from history to food, art and fashion. There are also interactive exhibitions to keep the kids entertained. Even if culture’s not your thing, a visit just to see the building is a must — dating back to 1887, this beautiful neo-classical former library now features a sleek glass-and-metal extension, plus a lovingly restored stained glass rotunda and other tasteful modern design touches. Admission to the Living Galleries is free after 6pm.

Kids will love the playground, which has a dry side and a wet side for extra fun on hot days.

Night Safari is the world’s first wildlife park intended for nighttime visits, and it has become one of the most popular attractions in Singapore. The 40-hectare (99-acre) park is divided into different zones and can be toured on foot or by tram. Special lighting enables guests to see animals (including fishing cats, leopards, markhor, rhinoceros, Malayan tigers, Asian elephants, striped hyenas, capybara, giant anteaters, lions and sloth bears) in naturalistic settings. One of the walking trails meanders through one of the few remaining original growth forests on the island, with huge trees that shelter birds, insects and small mammals. A can’t-miss experience!

A modern zoo with an open plan, Singapore Zoological Gardens displays its animals in wonderful natural exhibits.
